|
Potidaea was a colony founded by the Corinthians around 600 BC.
While besieged by the Persians in 479 BC, the town was saved by the earliest recorded tsunami in history. Herodotus reports how the Persians attackers who tried to exploit an unusual retreat of the water were suddenly surprised by "a great flood-tide, higher, as the people of the place say, than any one of the many that had been before".
As a Corinthian colony, Potidaea came to be a part of the Delian League. In the course of the rivalry between Corinth and Athens, the Athenians tried to prevent the Corinthian supreme magistrate from entering at Potidaea, thus producing one of the reasons for the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War (431 to 404 BC). During the war the Athenians kept the city under control until 404 BC, when it was passed to Chalcidice.

Andriscus was the last King of Macedon. In 168 BC, the Romans invaded Macedonia and overthrew the king, Perseus, in the 1st Battle of Pydna. In 149 BC, Andriskos, claiming to be the son of Perseus and Laodike, announced his intention to retake Macedonia from the Romans.
He travelled to Syria to request military help from Demetrius Soter of Syria. Demetrius instead handed him over to the Romans. Andriskos escaped from Roman captivity, and raised a Thracian army. With this army, he invaded Macedonia and successfully defeated the Romans in 149 BC. In 148 BC, Andriskos conquered Thessaly and made an alliance with Carthage, thus bringing the Roman wrath on him. In the same year, during what the Romans called the 4th Macedonian War, he was defeated by the Romans at the 2nd Battle of Pydna, and fled to Thrace, whose prince gave him up to Rome. After this Macedonia was formally reduced to a Roman province. |

The cities of Boeotia were organized as a confederacy, Tanagra was part of this confederacy.
Tanagra’s coin reverses typically show the forepart of a galloping horse which may have some connection to the cult of two local heroes, Ephippus (Horseman) and Leucippus (White Horse).
On this coin the horse wears a laurel wreath around its neck. The laurel wreath was an emblem of victory of the Pan-Hellenic games. The type may celebrate the victory of a Tanagran horse in a racing event. |
